Every year, I think I’m going to take a magazine clipping by storm and create something awesome for Thanksgiving that’s totally out of the box and yet delicious and gorgeous. (I also think I’m going to forgo the family thing and say “peace out, we’re only doing a Friendsgiving where for once we don’t have to travel…we ALWAYS have to travel 2-3 hours one way…”. The Friendsgiving thing is a pipe dream.)
And every year, I actually never do the unique recipe because there’s something undeniably classic about the same-old. Maybe because we really only whip out these recipes once a year. Maybe because it’s just all so GOOD and why fix it if it ain’t broke? And also, it’s quite likely I’m a closet traditionalist. But from my (extended/in-law family’s) table to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
Our annual table is filled with the following:
Turkey (of course!)
Homemade gravy (I cannot make it – it always is horrible)
Mashed Potatoes (totally my thing)
Stuffing (my mom’s recipe is to DIE for)
Green Bean casserole with crispy onions on top (is this a Midwest thing?)
Sweet Potatoes (one can never have enough potatoes)
Carrots with dill (warmed carrots)
Relish tray (for those who like uncooked carrots, celery, broccoli, etc)
Green and black olives (I’m debating bringing Kalamata to change it up?!…shhhhh)
Pickles (dill, preferably)
Jellied cranberries (out of a can – no one really works at this one)
Cranberry sauce (see above)
Rolls (more carbs!)
Apple pie (mmmm)
Pecan pie (not so mmmm for me)
Pumpkin pie (definitely a no for me, but apparently this is a necessary staple)
Ice cream (hey, we’re going all out)
Wine, beer, booze, whatever (duh)
What do YOU make for the holiday?!
